Water Conservation Tips

Apart from installing dual-flush toilets, for example or the showerhead mentioned above to reduce water consumption in the home, there are many other ways in which you can conserve water by implementing simple procedures in the home.

Share these tips with your kids, your spouse and your friends and family and help everyone save money and help the environment.

• Do not allow leaks to go unnoticed or unfixed. Leaky faucets or pipes not only have the potential to cause significant damage, but they can also make you waste gallons of water, thus increasing your water bill.
• Don't leave the faucet open for several minutes when you don't need the water. When brushing your teeth, shaving or taking a shower, there are times when you don't really need the running water. Close the faucet when lathering your face or your hair, or when brushing, and turn it on again when you are ready to rinse. Keep cold water in the fridge, so that you don't have to let it run until it cools.
• Only run the dishwasher when it is fully loaded or if you have an energy efficient dishwasher, then use the appropriate water level or load size option on the dishwasher. The same applies to the washing machine. Don't run it unless it is fully loaded or use the special setting for half a load.
• Reuse water whenever possible. If your pet doesn't drink all its water, use it to water the plants, for example.
• Thaw foods in the refrigerator overnight or in the microwave instead of under a flow of warm water.
• Monitor your water bill. Any significant difference between two months may indicate a water leak.
